Fourth Place

my score card
Earlier this week I attended my first 86'd event at The Drake. The theme for Monday night's event was a preserve swap and sale. In addition to exchanging preserves with fellow canners, a jam and jelly battle was judged by Sarah B. Hood.

My entry for the jam contest was pickled strawberry jam. Although I knew that I would lose points because the jam was on the runnier side, I hoped that the flavour and unconventional pickled aspect of the jam would win me points. I came in fourth out of eight contenders. I am mighty proud of my meager accomplishment because I don't often get the chance to have my hard work judged by professionals.

All entries were evaluated in three categories: taste (flavour, aroma, originality, local ingredients); texture & appearance (set, mouth feel, distribution, colour, visual appeal, jar presentation); and technicality (well-sealed jar, correct headspace). There were a total of 25 points to be earned.

I brought a jar of picallily and red pepper jelly for the swap and left with summer berry wine jelly and jalapeno jelly. A successful night indeed.

  1. Oh, Dawnabelles, when it comes to food, you're ten times the "professional" that I am!

I should confess that in the low bar light, I read the note at the top of your card as "picked strawberry jam", thinking it meant that the maker had picked their own berries locally. If I had realized the berried were "pickled", I would probably have considered them in a different light and given you a few more "Taste" points.

Would you serve it with something like duck?

Missed you at Home Ec last night, but your honeycomb-printed dark chocolates were beyond divine!

    1. Honestly, I am proud of my fourth place.

The pickled strawberry jam is actually my favourite mix in with plain yoghurt.

      Glad you enjoyed the chocolates.
